Located within the vast river valley of the Bagni river, rich in woodland while near the to the sea, the LUIGIANE SPA is the oldest and most renowned health resort of Calabria.

The fame of the curative power of sulphurous waters of Guardia goes back centuries: Plinio the Elder describing the near-by Cetraro (Temesa) which was noted through the Middle Ages as "acquae calidae Tempsae" then as "acquae putidae" and again as " fons calidus ". The first document of the evidence of the therapeutic use of these waters, is dated 1446, It is a letter in which the future St. Francis of Paola thanks the noble-man Simon of Alimena for the charity bestowed to a woman, who having fallen ill was sent to Baths of Guardia.

Furthermore in 1571, the Italian humanist and historian Gabriele Barrio, speaking of the marriage of Robert Guiscard and the princess of Salerno Sikelgaita, indicated the "acquae putidae" of the Terme Luigiane as the boundary of the given estates. In 1703 the Abbot Pacichelli writes about the celebrated baths of Guardia. These were followed in the eighteenth century with writings by the Italians Aceti, Flower, Alfano, Giannone, until 1850 when the Neapolitan doctor Giovanni Pagano published his "Treatise on the luigiane mineral-waters of Guardia Lombarda", which represents the first scientific study on the sulphurous waters of the Terme Luigiane, in which he shows physical-chemical analysis and discusses the therapeutic properties and uses. Giovanni Pagano coined the term "Luigiane" for our Spa, in honor of Prince Luigi Carlo of Bourbon for the patronage received. Since then scientific attention to Terme Luigiane is constant. Distinguished physicians such as Gauthier, De Voto, Porlezza, Talenti, Messini, Frugoni have witnessed the great therapeutic efficacy, reported in numerous treatises and textbooks.

In the history of the Terme Luigiane is worth mentioning the development of spa facilities from the 1800's to the present day. In 1842 the properties of the Baths and their relative "comfort" were promoted with a clause that offered "if the promised benefits were false” “...besides the usual well-conditioned apartment buildings, several wooden shacks, ...appropriate shops, a decent coffee shop, ... and for those who want to get there by sea, a smooth and flat road, not more than a quarter of a mile from the shore that leads to the establishment ..."  With the floods in 1867 of the Fiumara dei Bagni and then, in 1903, that of the Callio creek, and between these the earthquake of 1870, mark the welcome end of an era  and the reopening of the Terme Luigiane, which after nearly three decades of oblivion, saw a constant flurry of interrupted investments season after season, the results of which we can admire today and lay the bases for the furture.
